Natural resource management

The most important aspect concerning natural resource management is water management. Water is the main factor upon which all life depends and for many people living in the desert state Rajasthan the daily struggle for water is very harsh. The scarce element of water is just one of the water related problems in the state that have been introduced during the time. Water is directly connected to agriculture given that without water it's impossible to grow crops which can have a severe impact on the economic situation of farmers and their families. HEDCON aims to discuss these water related problems and inform people and institutions to avoid ill effects on the rural masses.

Advocacy on human rights

After agriculture, mining is one of the biggest sources of employment in Rajasthan, and mineworkers generate more than eight billion rupees in government revenue each year. Although the large contribution to the state economy and the creation of The Mines Act (1952) many of the mineworkers are heavily exploited by the mine owners and their rights on safe working conditions, social security and health compensation are often neglected. The negligence of the working condition in the mines led to nearly two thousands accidents in the mines of Rajasthan within the last decade and the widespread development of occupational diseases most notably tuberculosis and silicosis.

HEDCON has been fighting against these atrocities for years and has achieved some good results. It is working directly with mineworkers by providing assistance in getting medical and legal support. It is providing trainings to mineworkers on different aspects for their empowerment and awareness building. Mass and media awareness has been created by posting stories in national and international newspapers, research has been undertaken and some books have been published. HEDCON will continue to strengthen her activities on mine workers problems in the future and new related issues like Occupational Lung Disease, child labour and women labour problems will be further explored.
