Who We Are

HEDCON is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable people and communities by working at the grass roots level for sustainable development in the Thar Desert region of Rajasthan. In 1998, eight NGOs decided to combine their knowledge and experience to set up a body that would be able to support research, documentation and advocacy on common social development issues. The vital need to both generate knowledge and create awareness in order to facilitate activities was the sole purpose for the formation of HEDCON in 1999.

By working as a social advocacy and technical support institution, they provide technical expertise and capacity building measures to various social and development organizations and initiatives. Originally, HEDCON focused on two issues that are of great importance to the people of Rajasthan; water management and human rights. However, through the development of these two topics HEDCON has also been involved with work on disaster management, education, empowerment of women and the elderly, HIV/AIDS, health promotion, food security, livelihoods, agriculture policy and women and child labour. HEDCON also conducts projects which seek to influence policy makers at both the state and national level.

The sole belief of HEDCON is that advocacy for and research about the causes of current poverty problems is an essential part of achieving sustainable development. Through the vast network of NGOs that HEDCON has created, information is being spread around through newsletters, trainings, workshops and publications.
